Keep the pe sensor Wire and cut it in one side and use apg connector
you need to have spare of APg sensor 

after you need to joined APg connector to PE wire

now you use apg sensor as PE sesnor that is bigger, when there is conpenents in pag sensor = no paper  when the is nothing in apg sensor = Paper

i will search picture it should be bester than this

I have one of these style. Do you have problems with it staying firm and level?

yes Andy it's not very stable, it's cheap material,  but for personnal use it's good option.
my problem was difference bewteen left and right side during the adjustement.

For PE sensor this picture to explain

the two wires on the top are orginal pe wire and original Apg wire

under the pe wire is cuted and connected to apg connector ( the black wire of original PE wire need to be in center position on Apg connector)

it was with white ink dupont and pretreatment dupont

Nice build, congrats.
Is that lab jack stable enough for full A3 ( 30x42 ) platen ?
I am thinking about ordering 200mm x 200mm.
